Decks built with planning—not shortcuts.

Decks are fully exposed structures, constantly affected by moisture, sun, temperature changes, and daily use. When planning, structure, and material selection are overlooked, problems often surface years later as movement, rot, or structural failure.

Why Deck Issues Often Show Up Years After Construction

Most deck failures don’t begin with the surface boards. They start with how the deck is planned, supported, and connected to the home. Improper footings, inadequate drainage, poor fastening methods, or undersized framing can quietly compromise a deck’s integrity. These issues may not be visible right away, but over time they lead to movement, sagging, rot, and safety concerns. In coastal New England, constant moisture and seasonal movement place additional stress on deck structures, making proper planning and execution essential.

Long-term deck problems often result from:

Our Deck Building Process

A structured approach focused on safety, durability, and long-term performance.

Site Evaluation & Structural Review

We evaluate soil conditions, existing structures, elevation, and load requirements to determine the safest and most appropriate deck design.

Planning, Design & Material Coordination

Framing layout, fastening systems, drainage, material selection, and all required permits are planned before construction begins.

Site Preparation & Protection

Work areas are prepared and protected to maintain safety, organization, and respect for the property.

In-House Construction & Active Supervision

Our in-house carpentry crews build the deck under active supervision, ensuring proper installation at every structural connection.

Final Inspection & Completion

We complete a final inspection to confirm structural integrity, finish quality, and code compliance.

THE SAFETY RISKS OF IMPROPER DECK CONSTRUCTION

Across Cape Cod, we frequently dismantle decks that suffer from critical structural failures, often stemming from improper footings, undersized framing, or ledger boards installed without flashing. While these decks may pass a visual check initially, the harsh coastal environment exposes these shortcuts within a decade, leading to dangerous settling, loose guardrails, and hidden rot where the deck meets the house. In many cases, this “invisible” ledger failure silently compromises the structure until a complete, expensive reconstruction is the only option.

At Lions Siding & Roofing, we prioritize structure over speed. We excavate footings below the frost line to prevent heaving and install rigorous flashing to protect your home from rot. By strictly following building codes, we ensure your deck remains a stable, permanent retreat rather than a future liability.

Ty Soares, who works for this company, is a kind individual, a man who can be relied on and trusted. He found me stranded and lost with my two dogs in a conservation area parking lot and took time out of his busy day to give my dogs water and he drove me and my dogs to my car which was a few miles away. I am getting an estimate for new windows from this company because if their employees are like Ty, that is who I want to do business with.

Thanks to Yuri, Ty, Gabriel and the entire Lions Roofing Team for an amazing job installing our new roof. From start to finish, this is a first class company that makes sure they deliver what they promise and that the customer is satisfied when the job is complete. Ty did a thorough pre-inspection of both the inside and outside of the roof area, eaves ridge and gutters. The written quote was one of the best I've ever received and they provided copies of their insurance and license for piece of mind. Project Manager Gabriel was on site before, during and after completion, and always available to answer any questions. The overall job was completed in one day, with a follow-up day for a couple of hours to finish a couple of additional requests I had. One point I must bring up was how clean the job site was after they were done. If you have any roofing or siding projects coming up. I give my endorsement to Lions Siding and Roofing! Thanks again!

The staff (sales, project manager, owner) were phenomenal. They were courteous, thorough, and very customer focused. Their prices were competitive, but what set them apart was their customer touch. I highly recommend them.

I cannot heap enough praise and gratitude on LIONS Siding and Roofing. The owner Yuri is incredibly knowledgeable and came by the house on a Saturday to assess storm damage to my siding. What was originally planned to be just an assessment ended with Yuri repairing the siding fully himself. Along the way, he provided detailed explanation of every step of the process, so that I would be able to make minor repairs to the house on my own if they need arose and generously refused any compensation. I was so grateful and impressed by his resourcefulness and generosity. Any company where the owner is willing to get up on a ladder, teach others, and so clearly knows and loves his craft is one I am happy and eager to recommend to anybody. I know that I will be reaching out to Lions for my future projects without hesitation.

Deck Materials Selected for Exposure and Longevity

Deck materials must withstand constant exposure to the elements. Choosing the right material depends on usage, maintenance preferences, and environmental conditions.

Composite/PVC Decking (e.g., TimberTech, Trex).

Composite decking offers durability and low maintenance when installed correctly. Proper framing, fastening, and ventilation are essential to long-term performance.

Pressure-Treated Wood Decking

Pressure-treated wood can be appropriate for structural components and certain deck designs when properly detailed and maintained.

Hardwood Decking (Ipe, Mahogany, and similar species)

Premium materials require precise installation and proper structural support.
All deck materials are installed by our in-house crews following manufacturer guidelines and structural best practices.

Common Deck Questions From Homeowners

How long does it take to build a deck?
Timeline depends on size, design, and conditions, but projects are planned to minimize disruption. For reference a 500sqft deck rebuild would take us around two weeks.
Yes. Permits are required for any structural deck work. If the project is limited to refinishing, a permit is typically not needed. Our team will assess your project, determine whether permits are required, and ensure all requirements are addressed before work begins.
Your deck is built by our licensed, in-house carpenters, following a strict, proven construction process to ensure consistent quality and long-term performance.
Deck safety starts with proper structural planning, correct fastening methods, and code-compliant construction. Every project is built to meet local requirements and is inspected to ensure long-term stability and safe use.Structural planning, proper fastening, and final inspections are part of every project.

A CLEAR PATH FORWARD

We provide homeowners with clarity, structure, and peace of mind from the first review.

THE LIONS DIFFERENCE:

STRUCTURE, SAFETY & ACCOUNTABILITY

Engineered Structure

Decks aren’t just surfaces — they’re load-bearing structures. Every deck is planned with proper framing layout, footing depth, joist sizing, and connections to ensure long-term structural integrity and safe use.

Code-Compliant Construction

From structural connections to guardrails and stair geometry, every deck is built to meet or exceed local building codes. When permits are required, we manage the process and inspections from start to finish.

In-House Accountability

Your deck is built by our licensed, in-house carpenters — not subcontractors. This ensures consistent workmanship, clear responsibility, and a team that stands behind the structure long after completion.

REBUILDING A DECK IS A STRUCTURAL DECISION

When a deck reaches the point of rebuilding, safety and structural integrity become the priority. Load paths, ledger connections, footings, and code requirements must all be re-evaluated before new construction begins.

We treat deck rebuilds as structural projects — not cosmetic upgrades — ensuring the new deck is safe, stable, and properly integrated with the home.
